Edwardian Corset History

1900 - 1909

***1899 -1902 Radical changes are happening in the corset silhouette. The new strait front corsets from Paris are all the rage and stores everywhere are discarding their old stock as demand for the new styles grows.

(** Keep in mind that some are quick to embrace the latest styles and many continue to wear the older style corsets for some years.)

This is one of the most beautiful decades for the corset but also the most painful. They claimed that the newer style of corset was a return to the "natural form" when in reality it was quite the opposite. Corsets are cut in a way to encourage your back to arch and for the wearer to lean slightly forward. This can be a most painful posture to maintain. Corsets are still tightly fitted on the waist and worn loose or below the bust for padding. Emphasis is shifting towards the hips as corsets get longer by the end of the decade.

Bust improvers and padding needed to achieve the pigeon or Juno bust with the new style corsets
