1870’s early bustle (high waisted bodices) longer cuirass bodices bring longer corsets by the middle of the decade
The 'spoon busk' was invented in about 1873. "Its distinctive shape was heralded as an important innovation, increasing comfort, preserving health, reducing unsightly bulges and enhancing the figure. It appeared in fashionable models until the 1890s and was known by other imaginative names such as ‘pear’, ‘envelope’ and ‘patent taper busk’".-Lucy Johnstone, curator of fashion from 1800 to 1914 at the V&A The early 1870’s bustle gowns had high waisted bodices but the longer cuirass bodices of the second half of the decade bring longer corsets.
All busks until the mid 1890s are "dished" (a dished busk curves inwards at the base center front, twords the abdomen, cupping the lower belly).
*** I am placing the photos of antique corsets within the year in which I feel it belongs, it is not exact, I try. The ads however are from publications of that year.
(Please keep in mind that the diagrams shown were patented concepts. Though designed and patented at the time, most did not become mainstream.) |

Honestly, this web site is a bit expensive. If you would like to help I would greatly appreciate it.
