Corsets 16th century were called "Stays" or "bodies"

If the corset was constructed as one piece, usually opening at the back, it was called a "body".

If the corset was constructed in two halves it was called a "pair of bodies".

The Coche (later known as the busk) appears to straighten the front of bodices.

A light steel or reed framework introduced into garments

Separation of the skirt from the bodice leads to development of the corset

 

Shown below is the "effigy corset" of Queen Elizabeth I. Worn by her effigy in Westminster Abbey

for centuries and reputed to have been worn by the Queen in life.
