Corset image from an 1862 Godey's Lady's Book

It is very similar in pattern to my corset

This is the second oldest corset in my collection to date.

This corset features a unique type of busk which I have never seen before. Made of brass and stamped with decorative patterns on each clasp. The top clasp hooks upward onto a peg, the central clasp is a decorative version of the standard type and the bottom clasp hooks downward and forms a skirt or string hook. My personal belief is that the darn busk is the reason this corset survives to this day, it is nearly impossible to un-hook, even off the body!!

Ah ha! I have just recently been told that this corset is actually a riding corset. This is why it is cut so high at the hips and has that tricky busk. It all makes sense now, the busk cannot pop open while riding (that's for darn sure).

This corset also features a slightly un-usual grommet placing at the back (I do hope I laced her correctly). Otherwise this corset seems to fit the standard for the corsets of the 1860s. This corset's waist measures 20".

I have made a reproduction of this corset for one of my customers.

Honestly, this web site is a bit expensive.

If you found it helpful and would like to send a donation I would greatly appreciate any amount.
